Decommissioning Dell EMC SAN Storage in Dubai & the UAE

Storage racks are the hardest part of a data centre exit. They are heavy, they have cache that needs a proper shutdown, and they come with cables and rails that are easy to leave behind.
Planning a colocation exit or a cloud migration? Send your site and equipment list on WhatsApp (+971 52 857 3495) or use our server and storage selling page.

Teams planning a storage exit usually ask:

  • Can we just switch it off at the PDU?
  • Who lifts the large shelves?
  • Which cables and rails go with the arrays?
  • Can we sell the switches and racks in the same visit?

Shut Down Before You Unplug

Shut arrays down through their management tools. Pulling power cords on a live array can trigger a cache protection event.

Arrays use battery-backed or flash-backed cache to protect writes. A clean shutdown lets that cache flush. Check the vendor’s shutdown steps for your model, then confirm the array is fully off before anyone touches a cable. Dell lists platform details on its Unity XT manuals page and the PowerStore platform guide.

Access rules differ between operators, free zones and towers. Ask your facility what it needs for crew and vehicle approval, and for a serialised list of equipment leaving the site. Allow time.

Ops note: photograph the rack before anything is unplugged. It shows cable routes and shelf order for reinstallation.

De-Racking Heavy Shelves

Large enclosures need a lift plan before the day starts. Never rely on one person at the front of a populated shelf.

Weight depends on the model and how many drives are fitted. The high-density 5U shelves, such as the ME5084, are the heaviest and are often moved with a server lift. Check the weight in Dell’s ME5 documentation and product page.

On the very large shelves, installers often unseat the drives into numbered trays first to reduce weight. If you do this, label each drive with its slot, because they must go back in the right place.

Cables, Transceivers and Rails

The cables, transceivers and rails are part of the sale. Leave them with the equipment.

What to Bundle With Storage

Label cables before you unplug them. Bag each shelf’s cables with its asset tag. For more on caddies and media, see our wipe or pull guide.

Selling the Whole Cage

A storage exit rarely stops at the arrays. Switches, racks, PDUs and UPS units can go in the same visit.

List Fibre Channel switches, cabinets and UPS units on separate lines from the storage. A mixed cage is easier to quote when each item has its model and quantity. For the storage valuation itself, read our SAN storage guide. Servers in the same cage? See our server decommissioning guide
