Selling HP EliteDesk & ProDesk Fleets After an Upgrade

Most fleet payouts are lost in the last week, not on the price. A locked BIOS or the wrong power adapter can hold up a whole pickup.

If you are retiring 20 or 200 HP desktops, you probably worry about the same things:

  • Will one locked PC delay the whole collection?
  • Are the adapters in the right boxes?
  • How do we handle PCs mounted behind monitors?
  • Can we trust the data wipe?

This is how to prepare, in the order that saves the most time.

Release the BIOS Lock on the Whole Floor

A BIOS password turns a working PC into a problem unit. Clear it across the fleet before pickup, not after.

HP’s BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU) lets an IT admin read and change BIOS settings across many PCs from one script, including password settings. If your team already uses it, run it on the whole batch and test a sample of five units afterwards.

Without the password, nobody can boot from USB or reinstall Windows, so the PC is priced as parts. Also check Intune or Autopilot enrolment. A factory reset does not remove it.

Ops note: keep a log of which units were cleared. If one fails at inspection, you know which batch to recheck.

Match the Adapter to the PC

Desktop Minis come with different power adapters, and the wrong one can cause power warnings or slow performance. Keep each adapter with its PC.

Higher-power Minis usually ship with a larger adapter than the lower-power ones. When bricks are thrown into one carton, mismatches follow. A unit without its original adapter gets a replacement deduction.

Use a marker. Write the asset tag on the adapter or tape it to the PC.

PCs Mounted Behind Monitors

Some Minis sit in a monitor stand or a mounting bracket. Unmount them first, so each PC is a standalone unit.

HP sells the Mini-in-One 24 monitor, which holds a Desktop Mini at the back, and VESA brackets for Minis. Release the PC, keep the bracket and screws together and note whether the monitor is included. Monitors can be listed on a separate line.

Export the Fleet List

A clean list gets a faster quote than 100 photos. Export model, product number and serial for every PC, then group identical units.

On Windows, PowerShell can read the serial and product number from the BIOS. Ask your IT team to export them to one sheet.

List faulty or locked units on separate lines. For how each generation is valued, see our HP desktop valuation guide.

Data Security Before Handover

Wipe the drives or remove them. Follow a recognised standard so you can show your auditors what was done.

NIST SP 800-88 and the Ohio University media sanitization standard both explain the methods. If policy requires pulling drives, that is fine. We price the PCs as drive-removed. Leave the CPU and RAM inside. See why in our OptiPlex whole vs parts guide.
