Selling Cisco Catalyst Switches: Per Unit or by Scrap Weight?

A scrap dealer weighs a switch. A buyer reads its part number. That gap is why unit price vs scrap value matters so much for Cisco Catalyst 9200, 9300 and 9500 switches in Dubai: one method pays for metal, the other pays for a working enterprise switch.

If you have working Catalysts, send the part numbers to +971 52 857 3495 or use our network switch selling page.

Why Scrap Dealers Underpay

A scale measures metal, not function. A tested Catalyst is worth far more than the same box priced by the kilo.

Scrap pricing ignores the chip, the ports, the PoE hardware and the license. All of that is what a buyer pays for. A working 9300 is an enterprise switch, not a block of aluminium and copper.

This is the most common way companies lose money in a clearance. A storeroom gets cleared fast, someone calls the nearest scrap dealer, and the working switches go out by weight. I would rather you spend ten minutes identifying them first.

Tip: if a dealer will not look at part numbers before quoting, treat that as a warning.

Identify Each Switch

The part number and serial number are what turn a “box” into a priced unit. Get them before you ask for any quote.

On a switch you can still power on, the standard inventory command lists the model, serial number, modules and power supplies. On unplugged units, photograph the label on the back or side. Serials usually start with a few letters that mark the factory, and the part number ends with codes that tell you the PoE type and license level.

Cisco’s data sheets list every variant: the Catalyst 9300, the 9200 ordering guide and the Catalyst 9500.

The License Level

Part numbers ending in -E or -A show the license tier. The higher tier can raise the offer, but check what is actually transferable.

Network Essentials and Network Advantage are different feature tiers. Advantage includes more routing and fabric features, so some buyers prefer it. Licensing rules change, and what moves to a new owner depends on Cisco’s terms, so confirm with Cisco or your reseller before you promise a buyer anything.

For PoE, ports and modules, see our Catalyst valuation guide . To clear the configuration before sale, read the factory reset guide..

What Is Really E-Waste

Old, unsupported models often have little resale value. Treat them separately, not as part of the main batch.

Not every switch in a storeroom is a Catalyst 9000. Older families, such as the 2950, 3560 and 3750, are far less in demand, and some are close to scrap. Mid-age models, like the 3850 and 2960-X, can still sell, but at a much lower level than a 9300.

Sorting a Mixed Batch

GroupExamplesHow to sell
Current campusCatalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500Per unit, by part number
Mid-ageCatalyst 3850, 2960-XPer unit, lower level
Legacy2950, 3560, 3750Often scrap or low per-unit
DamagedCracked case, dead portsParts or scrap

List the groups on separate lines. Sending one number for a whole storeroom hides the value in the top group. A mixed batch is quoted fairly when each line has a model and a quantity.

Before You Send Details

Send the part numbers, quantity and a photo of each label. Say which units are working and which are not. The final offer depends on inspection, and terms are on our inspection and payment page.
