Clearing a Comms Room of Cisco Catalyst Switches in the UAE
Most comms room clearances go wrong because of timing, not hardware. If you need to clear a comms room of Cisco Catalyst 9200, 9300 or 9500 switches in Dubai before a fit-out or lease handover, plan the day before you touch a cable.
Send your site and equipment list to +971 52 857 3495, or use our network switch selling page. For a full office, see office IT equipment buyback .
Before the Day
Agree the shutdown window with your building and your IT team first. A clearance that starts without approvals usually stops at the lobby.
Commercial towers often need advance notice for service lifts, contractor access and equipment leaving the building. Ask the building team what they require, and book the lift. Fit-out schedules can move quickly, so confirm the date in writing.
Then handle the switches themselves. Record each model and serial before power is cut, and wipe the configuration as your policy requires. Our Catalyst factory reset guide covers that, and the per-unit vs scrap guide explains why the list matters.
Ops note: photograph the rack front and back before anything is disconnected. It records port labels and cable runs.
Unpatching Without Damage
Cables are the main thing that damages switches during a clearance. Release each connector properly, never pull the bundle.
Rushed crews yank patch cables in bundles, and the plastic latch on a copper port can break. A broken latch lowers a switch’s value. Label each cable at both ends, release the clip on each connector, and unplug in small groups.
For fibre, cap each connector as it comes out and keep the fibre away from sharp bends. Dust on an optic is a nuisance later.
Heavy Chassis
A modular Catalyst 9400 is a different job from a fixed 48-port switch. Reduce the weight first.
Fixed switches are a one-person lift in most cases. A loaded modular chassis is not. Remove the supervisors, line cards and power supplies first, keep them labelled, and lift with two people or a lift. Check weights and handling notes in Cisco’s 9400 data sheet and the 9300 and 9200 sheets for fixed models.
Leave the Optics Where They Are
Fitted optical modules protect the port and add value. Pull them only if the buyer asks.
An empty optical cage collects dust. A fitted module keeps it clean and shows what the switch was running. Note each module’s type from its label. If your policy says optics stay with the company, tell us before the day.
Comms Room Checklist
| Item | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Approvals | Book lift and access early | Avoid delays |
| Inventory | Record models and serials | Needed for the quote |
| Cables | Label both ends, unclip properly | Protects port latches |
| Optics | Leave fitted unless told | Protects cages, adds value |
| Modular chassis | Remove cards and PSUs first | Safe weight |
| Rails and ears | Keep with each switch | Complete unit |
Selling the Whole Room
A comms closet holds more than switches. Sell the rest in the same visit.
Firewalls, wireless access points, IP phones, UPS units and the rack itself can all go. List each type on its own line with a model and quantity. A single list gets a single quote and a single visit. Servers in the same room? See our server decommissioning guide. Dubai sites can use IT equipment collection in Dubai
