Selling HP EliteDesk & ProDesk Without the Hard Drive

You can sell an HP desktop without its drive. The PC is priced as drive-removed, so the missing storage is not a problem. Missing screws and brackets are.
Send your model and a photo of the empty bay on WhatsApp (+971 52 857 3495) or use our computer selling page.

If your IT team is pulling drives this week, you probably have these questions:

  • Does a PC without a drive still sell?
  • What must stay inside the chassis?
  • Is removing the drive enough, or should I wipe it first?
  • Who keeps the removed drive?

What “Drive-Removed” Means for the Price

A drive-removed HP desktop is priced without the storage, so the offer is lower than for a PC with a working SSD. The rest of the machine keeps its value if it is complete.

The buyer adds a drive and installs Windows. So the CPU, RAM, chassis and power adapter still count. A missing drive is expected. A missing bracket or screw is not, because the buyer has to source it.

What to Leave Inside

Remove the drive, not its hardware. The screws, brackets and cables that hold a drive should stay with the PC.

On a small-form-factor (SFF) model, the drive sits in a swing-out cage and is held by guide screws. Those screws are easy to lose, and a drive will not sit properly without them. Check the cage and the chassis for spares before you hand the PC over.

On a Desktop Mini, the 2.5" bay uses a bracket and cable kit, and an M.2 drive sits on a small standoff screw. Leave all of it in place.

Tip: photograph the empty bay and the screws before pickup. It proves nothing is missing.

Wipe First or Pull First?

Pulling the drive keeps your data physically with you. A wipe is a good second layer, especially if the drive will be reused.

HP desktops include a secure-erase option in the BIOS setup and a hardware diagnostics tool. Menu names change between generations, so check your model’s HP documentation before relying on a path. HP lists specifications on its EliteDesk 800 G6 SFF page.

For company data, follow a recognised standard. NIST SP 800-88 and the UTHSC sanitisation guidelines explain when to clear, purge or destroy media. If a drive is destroyed, keep the certificate.

Selling Several Without Drives

Mark every drive-removed unit on your list so each one is priced correctly.
