Asset List and Health Logs for Selling Dell EMC Storage

A serial number tells a buyer what left the factory. It does not tell them what you added since. If you are putting together an inventory checklist for selling a Dell EMC Unity or PowerStore array, start with what the array holds today.

Send your list to +971 52 857 3495 or use our server and storage selling page.

Serial Number First, But Not Only

Record the array’s serial number and the Service Tag, then list every shelf and drive added later. Upgrades after purchase do not show on a factory record.

Dell EMC arrays carry a long serial number, and many also carry the short seven-character Service Tag. Both are printed on a label on each enclosure, and the management software shows them too. Copy both.

Here is where sellers lose money. An array bought with a few drives often gets more drives, or a second shelf, a year or two later. A buyer reading only the original record will price the small version. Add the extras to your list yourself. For the Service Tag lookup, Dell has a Service Tag guide.

The List to Copy

One row per enclosure. Write what is fitted today, and mark anything you do not know.

2Expansion shelf(copy from label)Shelf only24(from drive label)Grade BOne PSU missing

The two columns that matter most are role and drive model. A head unit with controllers and a plain shelf are different products. And the drive model on the label, including its size, is what a buyer uses to price flash. The example rows are only a pattern, not real data.

Drive Health

Drive wear tells a buyer how much life is left. If your system can report it, include it.

Solid state drives wear out with writes, and most arrays record how much life remains. Management tools for Unity, PowerStore and PowerVault can list drives and often export that list to a file. The exact screens and commands change with software version, so use Dell’s documents for your release: the Unity XT manuals the PowerStore platform guide and the ME5 support matrix.

Tip: export the drive list before the array is shut down. Once it is powered off, you cannot read it without turning it on again.

Attach the export to your list. A buyer who can see wear levels will quote with more confidence.

If the Array Is Already Powered Down

Four photos are enough to start. Say clearly what you could not check.

  1. Front of each enclosure, showing the drive bays.
  2. Rear, showing controllers, power supplies and cards.
  3. Labels, with serial numbers and models.
  4. Drive labels, with a few examples of model and size.

If many drives are identical, a few examples will do. Mention how many there are.
