Read the Model Code First

The generation and power rating are indicated by the code on the bottom of the sticker and that’s more important than the name on the lid.

The 2022 Turning Point: Why Year Matters

The AN515-58 and PH315-55 in 2022 have significantly more GPU power and feature a MUX switch which is why they are priced higher than the 2021 models.

The Helios Neo 16, Helios 16 and 18 also moved to 16:10 screens (WUXGA, WQXGA or Mini-LED) and Intel 13th and 14th Gen HX processors.

Nitro V 15 vs Nitro 5: Don’t Mix Them Up

The Nitro V 15 is the more affordable of the two models. Its RTX card is drawing 60W to 75W so it’s not priced the same as the Nitro 5.

A lot of sellers will advertise the Nitro V 15 as a ‘Nitro 5 with RTX 4060’. The buyer will then check the code and make the appropriate adjustment. If you’re given the code in advance then there will be no need for a re-quote when the item is collected.

Storage, RAM and Cooling Checks

Acer call them easy to service and the consumer is well aware of that. The cost of missing parts is greater than the benefit of the upgrade.

• The RAM has two slots for SO-DIMM modules (16GB is a good option). Confirm with msinfo32 (Win + R).
• The Nitro 5 has two M.2 NVMe slots and one 2.5" SATA bay. If you’ve removed the drive then please do make sure the SATA ribbon cable is still in the box.
• For cooling we use AeroBlade metal fans and liquid metal. We do a load test and monitor the temps and early throttling will reduce the offer.
• For the battery, run powercfg /batteryreport. Swollen batteries are a safety hazard so let us know before the item is collected.
• The screen has dead pixels and backlight bleed which reduces the quoted value.

Tip: take a photo of the SATA cable and of any drive that’s been removed as that will prevent a deduction for “missing parts”.

The Charger: Seat It Properly

The sale includes an original Acer charger and high power models will of course not deliver their full potential with a poor quality charger in place.

The Acer barrel plugs have to be inserted with a solid double click to get them to click into place. If a plug is loose it may appear as though the port is dead so you should push it in fully before testing.

The Nitro V 15 comes with a 135W charger. The AN515-58 and AN16-41 require a charger of between 230W and 330W. There will be a deduction if the original charger is not available and a replacement is required.

Before Pickup: Wipe Your Data

Log out, backup the data and then wipe the drive according to NIST SP 800-88 for a clean erase.

Erase the BIOS password and log out of both your Microsoft and Steam accounts. You can also just remove the SSD and take that with you (we price the laptop on the basis of it having the drive removed so the screw and bracket will stay in).
